Wooden Bird Mobile
For my nephew’s first birthday, I wanted to make him something special to jump-start his future birdwatching hobby. Gotta start ‘em young! I found a great DIY tutorial online for a wooden bird mobile and followed it step by step. At first, I tried painting it with the realistic colors and textures of a Canada Goose, but it didn’t look quite right and I read somewhere that bright colors are probably more fun for kids anyway so I ended up sticking with the tutorial’s original design. I wasn’t exactly in love with the woodworking part, but I could see myself experimenting with different bird designs in the future if I had some pre-cut pieces to work with.
When I finally gave it to him, he smiled and watched it fly for a solid minute before moving on to his other toys. I sat there watching it much longer. It’s probably for the best that it’s out of my hands… otherwise I’d just sit around and stare at it all day.

Birdwatching Notes:
Still learning my camera settings and messed up so the photos aren’t as sharp as they potentially could’ve been
Heard heavy wings flapping above and watched a Great Blue Heron land near me
The male Western Bluebirds were showing off their bright blue plumage!!
Saw not just one, but three Vermillion Flycatchers!!
When the ducks frantically flush from the pond, that’s when you know the osprey is flying around (saw it carry away a big fish)
Cherry blossoms were in bloom and you can see some feathered friends hopping around and enjoying the blooms
February was a calm and quiet month but hold onto your horses for March!
