I’ve been leasing for about half a year now and I’ve loved every second of it. I know the responsibility of ownership is on a completely different level, but leasing has at least given me a real taste of what that life looks like. I’ve talked with my trainer about logistics and finances, and I think it actually feels doable! I also signed up for a horse packing trip this summer in the Sierra backcountry. Camping under the stars, clear blue alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, no cell service, just horses and nature. If I ever want to do horseback camping with my own horse, this will be the perfect introduction to learn what gear I will need and what the reality of it is like. I’ve grown corn, snap peas, and other vegetables before, but this year I want to add cut flowers into the mix. I’ve never had luck with starting flowers from seeds but this month I now have snapdragons (around 80 seedlings… oops), cosmos, sweet peas, and poppies growing. I know I technically should’ve started them in fall, but this is already progress compared to my usual March panic planting. Apparently it had quite the paparazzi following it earlier in the week, but when I went, there were only a handful of people in the park. Thankfully I ran into another birder on his way out, and he kindly pointed me in the right direction. Just as reported, the pipit was hanging out in the shade under the trees at the back of the park. Beginners were given detailed explanations of how to lope, intermediates got small tips but were able to do longer lopes, and advanced riders received no instruction and just went for longer stretches. I was ready to jump straight into the advanced group until they mentioned that first-timers should probably start with intermediate since they’d never gone through the meadows before and hadn’t jumped over the small ditches. The mention of “jumping” scared me a little, so I obediently joined the intermediate group, while one guy got a private advanced session with the wrangler since he’d been to the ranch multiple times. Loping freely across a meadow without having to stay in a single-file line was exhilarating, like flying with the wind. The advanced rider later told me that on his ride, he came across an eagle perched on a fence post, and when they approached, it flew right over them, like straight out of a movie. He even showed me the photo he captured. Totally not jealous at all. When I eventually joined the advanced group, I realized the “jumps” weren’t that bad at all. The horses just stretched their strides, so it barely felt like anything. The longer lopes did push my stamina, but riding with the rhythm for longer stretches actually made it easier to settle into the saddle. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63ba90cbb1aebd265b6d2d52/f02be66d-35f9-4894-9a3a-785ac06aaf3d/IMG_4376.PNG Blog - All the Pretty Horses - Cattle Drive Most of the time, when we passed by the cattle on rides, they’d just stare at us curiously and not react much. But once it was time to move them from one pasture to another, they resisted a little. Some stood their ground, mooing loudly, but with a snap of the reins and a bit of pressure, they gave in and moved along. Once a few started moving, the rest quickly followed. I honestly had no idea where the gate was or if we were even pushing them in the right direction since I was riding in the back, but somehow we got them there. Watching the calves trot to keep up with their moms was adorable. The bull, though, was another story. When he stood his ground, mooed back at us, and stomped his feet, it was actually intimidating. He was massive. The ranch also offers a week-long cattle drive experience, which I’d love to try someday. In the fall, they have to round up their cattle from the mountains, and each day the rides go deeper and deeper to find them, with earlier starts and later returns. It still ends with a warm bed and hot shower, so it’s not roughing it too much. I’d never tried it before, but it turns out I love it. They drove us out to a remote part of the ranch, set up the trap machines, and let us take turns. The ranch family went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome, with lodging, delicious meals, and various activities. The wranglers that did work on the ranch told us they were originally guests too and after years of enjoying their time at the ranch they decided to work there. Entering My Horsegirl Era I’m finally living my childhood dream and taking western horseback riding lessons! A few people have told me that I should take up a sport or go to the gym… so here I am! Surprisingly, the horse world mostly works through word of mouth. After making a bunch of calls, someone eventually passed along a list of trainers who were still taking students and that’s how I met my trainer! I wouldn’t have found her otherwise since she doesn’t really advertise and just relies on people sharing her name around. She’s a professional D1 barrel racer and super amazing and I have so much to learn from her. I was excited to be back at a barn again but honestly a little surprised at how much I had forgotten. Each lesson starts with getting the horse from the stall, grooming, and tacking. What used to be muscle memory now takes active thinking. The other day I grabbed the saddle before putting on the saddle pad and my trainer reflexively threw on the pad for me while she was on the phone and I just stood there completely embarrassed. A rookie mistake. Time to learn everything from the ground up again. The palomino quarter horse on the left is Coach. She’s super patient and sweet, but she’s definitely not a fan of working. Also a sweetheart and he loves to please so he’s always ready to go fast! I think he recognizes me now. When I go to his stall, he’s usually standing at the far end, but as soon as he sees me, he’ll nicker and come running up to the gate to say hi! <3 The first few lessons were kind of discouraging because I just couldn’t sit the trot. I was bouncing all over the place and couldn’t figure out how to stay balanced. It’s one of those things you really have to feel for yourself. People can describe it a million ways, but nothing prepares you like actually trying it. Having a good trainer definitely helps though. I think I can sit a slow trot now, but it’s still my weak spot. My trainer had me try riding bareback on her personal horse, Daisy, to try to get a better feel of the muscle movement. Walking felt great, but once she started trotting I immediately started slipping off since I had no grip and nothing to hold onto. She noted that I need to work more on my core strength. Loping/cantering on the other hand is so much fun! It’s a faster speed but surprisingly easier to sit. I feel like I’m flying with the wind at 30 mph, but once I looked back at a video of myself I realized it was more realistically maybe under 10 mph… I definitely need to work out more because the horses aren’t even breaking a sweat and yet I’m the one constantly out of breath during my lesson. And I know what you’re about to say!! The horses are doing all the work, you’re just sitting there! Let me tell you, it’s a full body workout. The regular lessons have gotten me to a point where I no longer get saddle sore but my core still feels sore after every ride. In fact, after my lesson I made dinner and then just completely crashed on my couch until I woke up to my morning alarm and realized I needed to get ready for work. But not before stopping at Pinnacles National Park! I bought a National Parks annual pass right before I left since I’m planning on visiting three National Parks this year. And for 2025, the card featured a Roseate Spoonbill! I made to sure to bring my collectible card with me so I could get a fun photo of the cards together. Unfortunately, Roseate Spoonbills don’t reside at Pinnacles but another iconic bird does, the California Condor. Since 2003, Pinnacles has been a major partner in the California Condor Recovery Program. It’s one of the few places in the world where captive-bred condors are released and monitored. The best time to spot one is early morning or evening around the High Peaks, when they ride the warm thermals or come in to roost. For birders, a Big Year means trying to identify as many bird species as possible within a single year and in a specific geographic area, like all of North America. It takes a lot of planning and travel, just watch The Big Year and you’ll get the idea. It’s a heartwarming comedy about birdwatching starring Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson. I highly recommend it. The birding community runs on the honor system, which, unsurprisingly, leads to a lot of drama and internet suspicion around record-breaking Big Year lists. I’m nowhere near ready to attempt one myself and the constant travel and quick stops just to check things off a list turns me away from the whole idea. I prefer to slow down and soak things in rather than rush to the finish line. But he suggests something different, a Little Big Year, where he confines the geographic area to an even smaller zone, and just focuses on setting personal goals and learning through the process. But when we reached Mount Rainier, the roads were perfectly plowed, even though the snowbanks around us towered ten feet high. This was four full days of back to back birding activities and interesting talks in Morro Bay! I also just upgraded to a 600mm telephoto lens so I was excited to test my new gear out in the field. With my new camera I felt like I gained some confidence and finally belonged with the other bird photographers (which is just silly). By the way, if you’re planning a visit to Morro Bay, many roads lack streetlights, most likely due to considerations for the surrounding wildlife reserves in the area. When I visited Carrizo Plain with my sister in April 2023 for the superbloom, we were surrounded by mountains and fields bursting with yellow, purple, and orange flowers against a sea of green. The plants die back in the winter and wait for rain in the spring to come back to life every year. I first joined her #avianaugust bird prompts back in 2021, where I debuted my collectible bird cards, and the rest is history. It’s wild to think we’ve technically known each other for almost four years but had never met until now! We met for a lovely lunch before heading out to explore Rock Creek Park. The photos online made it look like a winter wonderland blanketed in snow, but by the time I arrived, it had all melted, just some sad slush lingering on the roads. We had hoped to do some birdwatching, but for whatever reason (maybe last night’s rain?), the park was eerily quiet. Not a single bird that day! Okay, technically we saw some House Sparrows at the cafe and Crows fly by overhead, but that was it! At the International Spy Museum, I came across a model of a pigeon equipped with a tiny camera. During World War I, pigeons were used for aerial reconnaissance, carrying cameras as they flew over European military sites to gather intelligence. The cameras took continuous photos until the pigeons returned to their coops, where analysts would develop the film. Unfortunately, technological advancements and the invention of airplanes eventually put the pigeons out of a job. The miniature camera on display was nearly half the size of the pigeon itself so I can’t imagine how they managed to fly with all that extra weight! It reminded me of modern-day social media trends where owners attach tiny cameras to their cats’ collars to capture and post their daily escapades. I honestly had a great time looking at old mail and stamp designs, they gave me some inspiration for some future bird mail art! As a stationery enthusiast, there’s nothing quite like admiring old letters with their elegant handwriting. I think the art of writing letters is lost nowadays! Along the wall of different stamp collections, I of course perused the Duck Stamp Collection, which has almost all of the stamps since the first design! I had planned to check out the UCI IMCA exhibit for months, and I finally made it on the exhibit's last day! The gallery displayed works on California's diverse ecosystems and the ongoing efforts to conserve its natural resources. It really compelled visitors to reflect on their role in preserving the delicate balance between human progress and the beauty of nature. This month I started reading of Composition of Outdoor Paintings by Edgar Payne and I was delighted to stumble upon one of his masterpieces, "Payne Lake," along with some quotes on display!
